A Level Chemistry

A Level Chemistry offers an exciting insight into the fundamental principles that underpin the world around us, from the materials we use every day to the processes that drive industry, medicine and technology. Combining academic challenge with practical investigation, students develop strong analytical, mathematical and problem-solving skills while exploring how chemical concepts apply to real-world contexts. As the central science, Chemistry provides an excellent foundation for a wide range of degree courses and careers, including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, forensic science and scientific research.

Topics covered include:

  • Atomic structure and bonding
  • The periodic table and inorganic chemistry
  • Organic chemistry, including alkanes, alkenes, alcohols and aromatic compounds
  • Carboxylic acids, amines, polymers and proteins
  • Organic synthesis and analytical techniques
  • Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy
  • Equilibria and rates of reaction
  • Acids, bases and redox reactions
  • Enthalpy and entropy

Through developing a deeper understanding of chemical processes and learning how to investigate and solve complex problems, students gain skills that are highly valued by universities and employers alike.

Assessment

  • Total of 6 hours of examinations (3 x 2 hours) taken at the end of the course
  • A wide range of question types including multiple choice, short answer and extended response questions
  • Opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of both theory and practical skills through the examinations
