Sam, Engineering

Sam is a dedicated student at UTC and is committed to a future career in Formula One. 

He has just received his GCSE results, achieving  English Literature 8, Maths 7, Physics 7, Chemistry 6, Biology 5, English Language 5, a Level 2 Distinction in Engineering Design and Level 2 Merit in Engineering Systems and Manufacture.  

On opening his results he said: “I have had brilliant time at the school. The teachers and the community are great. The facilities in engineering are awesome. Standout people were Mr Rogers who really pushed me in math’s and Miss Aslan  who helped me in English. The teachers are really encouraging and helpful, which enabled me to get my great results. I am 100% staying on for post 16. I look forward to the new challenge and new people.” 

Sam joined UTC with a clear vision: to pursue his passion for engineering and motorsport. He was drawn not only to the opportunity to specialise in engineering but also to the school’s diverse and inclusive environment. “It was also the diversity – getting to meet people from different backgrounds and religions – and plus, the opportunities presented to you.” 

That vision is well supported by the staff at UTC. Sam shared how both the Principal, Mr Reynolds, and Vice Principal, Mr Cocken, have gone above and beyond in helping him chase his ambitions and have never disappointed him “They’ve always exceeded my expectations by bringing opportunities all the time.” 

One such opportunity came in the form of valuable hands-on experience. With support from Mr Cocken, Sam secured a work placement with a local mechanic, giving him the chance to work directly on car engines – a step that has fuelled his passion even more. 

Reflecting on his time at UTC, Sam says, “This school is like a community. I’ve always felt very safe, and all the teachers get on really well – it’s kind of like a family.” 

Looking ahead, Sam plans to continue his journey at UTC’s Sixth Form, where he will study Engineering, Physics, and Maths. His ultimate goal is to join the Williams Formula One team, a dream inspired by their strong work ethic and the leadership of their new team principal, James Vowles, who brings over two decades of experience from the Mercedes team.
