Jonah Douthwaite, Engineering
Jonah is celebrating his results and ready to start his career in mechanical engineering with a degree apprenticeship.
He has just received his A Level results achieving CD in Maths and Physics and double Distinction* in his engineering technical. Upon opening his results, he said: “I got the results that I expected and I’m really pleased with them. I’m looking forward to beginning my apprenticeship with BAE Systems.”
Jonah will now start work at BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness on a five-year Mechanical Engineering Degree Apprenticeship.
“There’s a wide range of opportunities here and lots of chances to meet different people and have a go at things.”
Whilst in Year 12 Jonah competed in the automation competition at WorldSkills as part of enrichment at UTC: “I found it really interesting and enjoyed the small scale experience I was able to get at UTC by using equipment like the mini factory Festo room.”
Talking about his overall UTC experience, Jonah said: “I joined the UTC in Year 9 because my old school wasn’t great, and I knew I wanted to study engineering. There’s a wide range of opportunities here and lots of chances to meet different people and have a go at things.”
Continuing: “I worked on a project in Year 12 with the Canal and River Trust, where with a couple of other students, we built a waste collection system to be attached to a canoe to clean litter out the canal. We built a prototype, tested and showcased it to the Trust, took on their feedback and improved it so it could be used.”
